LaunchGood is a crowdfunding platform focused on the Muslim community worldwide. LaunchGood went live in October 2013 and it raised more than $510.1 million from 1.6 million donors across 153 countries.
Main Challenge
Creators lacked a unified financial report that looked across all of their campaigns.
LaunchGood’s existing dashboard offered only campaign-level insights, forcing creators to manually stitch together their financial narratives. This was a barrier to effective campaign management.

The Solution
I identified 3 key features for the new Financial Dashboard.
I wrote the initial requirements documents to start scoping the project. The project consisted of 3 main features:
Financial Overview: Summary dashboard displaying the current financial standing, including the total amount raised, fees deducted, net amount, paid amount, and balance.
Financial Statements: Generate downloadable financial statements in standard formats (such as PDF and CSV).
Payment History: Display a chronological list of all payments received, including details like the payment date, payment method, amount, IDs, etc.

Designing the Initial Financial Dashboard concepts.
During a product design sprint, we explored two drastically different ideas for the dashboard:
Concept A: Minimal UI effort, no data visualization
Concept B: Higher UI effort with data visualization

Usability testing for Concept B was a critical phase in our project. We employed a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods to gauge user interaction and satisfaction. This included:
User Testing Sessions: Conducted with a diverse group of campaign creators, representing our target user base. These sessions involved participants completing typical tasks using the dashboard and providing real-time feedback.
A/B Testing: Comparing user interactions between the existing dashboard and Concept B, focusing on metrics like task completion time, error rates, and ease of use.
Surveys and Questionnaires: Post-testing surveys were used to gather subjective feedback on the user experience, including the intuitiveness of the design and overall satisfaction.

Alongside ‘Funds Raised’ users wanted to know how much was being spent on LaunchGood Ads.
In addition to monitoring their fundraising on LaunchGood, users were keen to understand their platform expenses. The main hurdle was the complete separation of our fundraising and advertising experience. To address this in v2, I proposed a solution involving two initiatives:
Create a unified dashboard experience:
Design a unified dashboard that seamlessly integrates both fundraising and advertising data. This would allow users to view comprehensive insights in one centralized location.
Introduce customizable analytics:
Which would users to tailor the dashboard according to their specific needs. This could include the ability to focus on fundraising metrics, advertising analytics, or a combined view based on user preferences.

3 challenges faced behind closed doors while scaling our financial dashboard.
Challenge #1
Taming data overload.
The UI became overwhelming due to the large amount of data.
Solution:
After continuous discussion with the engineering team, we decided to use accordions to show data progressively.
For mobile devices, we limited the amount of data, allowing users to see more on the desktop for a comprehensive view.

The donor anonymity dilemma.
80% of donors wanted to be anonymous, but fundraisers needed donor data.
Solution:
Working closely with the donor and compliance teams, we protected donor privacy by keeping them anonymous to the public.
At the same time, we provided creators with access to key pieces of donor data, enabling campaign management without compromising donor privacy.

Dashboard responsiveness.
Users expected feedback when interacting with the dashboard, particularly during report downloads and needing updates on financial activities.
Solution:
We integrated real-time visual feedback for report downloads. This feature provides instant cues, reassuring users about the status of their requests.
We will be implementing a broader range of real-time notifications in the upcoming version, ensuring users stay informed about key financial updates.

Internal Challenge
Updating the FAQ page for customer support.
While the product team advocated for a chat feature within the financial dashboard, the CX team faced limitations in handling additional support tickets. We reached a compromise by updating the FAQ page and reserving the chat feature for future implementation.

In addition to the 3 key features, I addressed 2 user pain points.
This was a key opportunity to address design debt. I scoped in fixes for some long-standing pain points:
Fee Transparency: Clear breakdown of all fees to eliminate surprises.
